President Al-Sisi meets with IAEA Director-General and Iranian Foreign Minister in Cairo to broker nuclear inspection agreement

In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) signed an agreement in Cairo on Tuesday to resume nuclear program inspections, marking Egypt's growing influence in regional nuclear diplomacy.

Diplomatic Achievement in Cairo

The agreement comes after Iran suspended cooperation with the international nuclear watchdog following Israeli strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities earlier this summer. Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi personally received Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi, demonstrating Egypt's crucial role in mediating regional tensions.

Breaking the Diplomatic Impasse

Presidential Spokesman Mohamed Al-Shennawi highlighted President Al-Sisi's emphasis on the agreement's importance for regional stability. The Cairo talks successfully bridged differences between Iran and Western powers, including the US, France, Germany, and the UK.

"The resumption of cooperation between Tehran and the IAEA represents a vital step towards de-escalation and reinforcing regional security and stability," stated Al-Sisi during the talks.

Broader Regional Implications

The discussions extended beyond nuclear matters, with Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Iranian counterpart addressing critical regional issues, particularly the Gaza situation. Both diplomats emphasized their opposition to forced displacement of Gazans, aligning with Egypt's consistent stance on Palestinian rights.

Key Outcomes:

  • Restoration of IAEA inspections in Iran
  • Enhanced regional security cooperation
  • Strengthened diplomatic channels between Iran and international community
  • Agreement on humanitarian aid access to Gaza
