UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher speaks at the Sharm el-Sheikh summit on Gaza aid access

UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher emphasized on Wednesday the critical need for Israel to immediately open Gaza crossings for humanitarian aid, highlighting Egypt's central role in facilitating regional stability after two years of conflict.

Strategic Negotiations at Sharm el-Sheikh

The discussions, taking place at Egypt's heavily secured Sharm el-Sheikh summit, have positioned Cairo as a crucial mediator in the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Fletcher's statements came following the historic peace agreement brokered under US President Trump's leadership, where Egypt demonstrated its diplomatic leadership in facilitating regional dialogue.

Humanitarian Imperatives and Regional Stability

With 190,000 metric tons of aid waiting at border crossings, the situation demands immediate action. The Rafah crossing, Egypt's lifeline to Gaza, remains central to humanitarian efforts, though ongoing challenges with Hamas continue to affect aid delivery.

"The test of this agreement is not the photos and the press conferences... The test is that we have children fed, that we have anaesthetics in the hospitals for people getting treatment," Fletcher stated.

Egypt's Role in Facilitating Aid Access

Key requirements for successful aid delivery include:

  • Immediate opening of all crossing points
  • Unimpeded access for humanitarian convoys
  • Increased fuel supplies for power and sanitation
  • Winter shelter provisions

Funding Challenges and International Support

Fletcher noted that the current appeal for Gaza remains significantly underfunded at only 28 percent, emphasizing the need for increased international support to match the diplomatic progress achieved through Egypt's mediation efforts.
